Sorting Buttons

20090526_076620090526_0767

Growing up, my mom had an organizing container with three or four dozen little drawers, all full of buttons. I remember spending hours pulling the little drawers out of the container, dumping out the buttons, and counting and reorganizing them. The memories (and the fact that I FINALLY have two children who keep non-edible objects out of their mouths!) inspired me to purchase a bulk buttons set and a plastic organizer (designed for jewelry beads, I believe). I’ll use some of the buttons on clothing and in crafts, and in the meantime Emma and Johnny are loving their new buttons – even if the buttons wind up less rather than more organized at the end of their play sessions!

Buttons are one of our favorite activities. There are so many great uses for them!

  2. I used to love my Mom’s button jar. She had so many neat shaped, brightly coloured buttons. I have a mason jar with some buttons in it, but they’re pretty boring white, black, brown, with the occasional red in there. I’ll have to find some bulk buttons at a thrift store or somewhere!

  3. I always loved sorting buttons as a child and already have a big button collection for sunnyboy. I’ve been saving them for years :)

Wow! $4 for so many lovely buttons is a great deal!! They look like they are having a great time!

  5. @Maile – I got this set of buttons from a JoAnn fabric store. They weren’t in an obvious part of the store, I had to ask where to find them, but I got a big plastic container of buttons for under $4.

  6. Another great idea! I need to get some buttons that my kids can play with. I have some that I use in my own crafting and the kids LOVE playing with them, but I don’t love the end result of their work with those. Did you get your bulk buttons at a normal craft store?

  7. Sounds like a great activity. I used to play with our buttons in that container too =)
