We had some friends over a few weeks ago for a science-themed play date, and made these simple bird feeders as part of the activity. Emma was the one who came up with the idea of making them heart-shaped, which was especially clever given that the play date took place on Valentine’s Day!

Lily shows off her bird feeder (with a cheerio in her mouth)

All of the kids were very proud of their bird feeders, but my kids decided they were hungrier than the birds. Lily has at least one cheerio in her mouth here…

Johnny eats the cheerios he was supposed to feed the birds

and so does Johnny! Our friends took their bird feeders home, but our neighborhood birds were stuck with birdseed – which is honestly probably better for them, anyway!

  1. We did this activity once on a trans-atlantic flight with a coupla ‘littles’. they wore their cheerio/froot loop necklaces for the rest of the flight and munched as needed :)
    Very cute!

Ooh–this is a good fine motor skill activity. We just made bird feeders too–the pine cone/peanut butter/birdseed kind.

  3. Those are very hungry birds :) Great pictures. Anna brought this kind of bird feeder from school, but birds were not interested.

  4. This is perfect! I have a zillion pipe cleaners and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with them. Plus my girls saw a homemade bird feeder the other day when we were out walking, so they’ll enjoy making their own.

Love the heart-shaped child-feeders. :) That looks like a lot of fun, and I completely concur that Emma is a genius for thinking they should be heart-shaped.

LOL I love that they couldn’t resist eating a few Cheerios of their own! What a fun activity for a play date!!
