Blacklight Art: Glow A Doodle

2013_11_15_9999_13

We get to try out products from ALEX Toys from time to time as part of my blogger relationship with the company, and this Glow A Doodle black light drawing kit was a big hit with all of my kids! Anything fluorescent will glow underneath a black light, and this kit features a white board, fluorescent white board markers, and then fluorescent colored pencils that can be used to draw on paper placed on top of the white board. The markers, pencils, and mini whiteboard eraser all store neatly underneath the board.

I loved watching all four kids gather around this novel drawing tool, and it has been a fun creative center for my kids during the shorter and darker winter afternoons, and a fun way to introduce them to the magic of black lights! You can see their initial reactions to the toy in this short video, which also shows the difference between what the images look like with the black light on and what they look like when the black light is turned off:

One-year-old Anna isn’t really old enough for this toy, but you can see that she was curious! Five-year-old Johnny did a good job of finding parallel activities for her to enjoy – he is always looking out for his baby sister!

The darkest part of winter hasn’t even arrived, so we have a lot more evenings to brighten up! Right now we are enjoying lights on our Christmas tree and candlelit dinners (highly recommended if you are looking for ways to help your kids key down in the evenings and get ready for bed), as well as a lot of Christmas music! Our light table is also getting a lot of use, especially by my three youngest kids.

What are some of your favorite indoor winter activities?

We received this toy for free as part of my blogging relationship with ALEX Toys. All opinions are my own.

  1. We have a similar set, but after one session daughter lost all interest in it. Then, again, she has little interest in drawing anyway. Our favorite inside activity is definitely board games!

  2. This is so way cool. It looks like it will be pulled out over and over- we do a lot of dry erase markering around here, so I’m sure my kids would love this!
