Texture play

texture playtexture play

Yesterday was one of those days. The kind where the kids are on edge and I get nearly nothing done. Thankfully this old favorite (see my original post about this taste safe sensory play activity here) pulled Emma and Johnny out of their sour moods. Johnny swirled everything around haphazardly. Emma made little mounds of corn and rice flour and wrote her name with her finger.

If you want to turn this into an educational activity, try using this as a way to practice letter writing – it’s much easier to write a letter in corn meal with your finger than with a pencil on paper.

  1. Can you please send me this recipe or tell me where I can find it? This would be a great sensory activity to use at work. Thanks!

    1. Hi Michelle,

I just started each kid off with about a tablespoon each of rice flour and corn meal – I put it on opposite ends of the tray and they mix it together while they play. You can buy both in the store. The rice is white and the corn is yellow, so they get a little bit of subtle color mixing in there, too. If you can get it coarsely ground, that has a nicer sensory feel, and it’s a bit less messy.

  2. Great idea. It really helped on a rainy, never-ending day. My son loved it!
P.S. Lovely blog you’ve got there. I appreciate sharing your ideas with us!

  3. I think Elijah would really enjoy doing that. He gets frustruated easy when trying to write letters.

Finally most of the morning sickness is gone. Now the cravings have hit full force, bring on the pickles and ham! =)
