World Culture for Kids: Canberra, Australia

World Culture for Kids at Mama Smiles Joyful Parenting

Today we are visiting Canberra, Australia, with Stacey, the stay at home mum of two energetic boys aged 7 and 9. Stacey’s blog, A Moment In Our World, is a journal of her family’s homeschooling adventures! Stacey and her family create lots of amazing things, learn new things everyday and hope to inspire everyone in the process. Stacey makes lovely printables, which she shares freely through her blog! Here are three my kids think are pretty awesome: Super Hero Matching Cards, Label the Farm Animals, and Australia 3 Part Cards – for learning the different states of Australia.

Canberra is the capital city of Australia and the home of Australia’s government. It is the largest inland city in Australia. We were lucky enough to take a trip to Canberra earlier this year. 2013 was the centenary of Canberra – 100 years as Australia’s capital city.

Canberra is located in the Australian Capital Territory on the ancient lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people. The name Canberra is derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra which means ‘meeting place.’

There are lots of amazing places to visit in Canberra. Here are some of the places we went to.

The Royal Australian Mint is where the Australian coins being made since 1965. We watched them make 5c coins and package them up ready for delivery. Our boys were even able to mint their own $1 coin.

We visited Old Parliament House. This is where the federal Parliament used to meet from 1927 to 1988 when they moved into their new building. It was such a big building with many, many rooms in which you could explore the history of Parliament. We couldn’t believe how big the Prime Minister of Australia’s office was and how many buttons were on their phone!

The War Memorial pays tribute to the Australians who have served in wars and those who have died at war. This Memorial was completed in 1941. We saw trucks and planes, weapons and armor that were used during the wars and conflicts that Australia was involved in.

The National Museum of Australia houses some of Australia’s most important items. We learnt about the land and people of Australia.

We had a great time in Canberra and we hope you have enjoyed learning about Canberra with us.

Thank you, Stacey, for sharing your family’s trip to Canberra with me and my readers! What a great introduction to your country’s capital city!
