Tomie dePaola is the November author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids! We were already big fans of this author – six-year-old Emma especially adores his Strega Nona books.
We borrowed all sorts of his books from the library – I basically took every book off the shelf – and The Popcorn Book was one of our favorites! It’s a very neat exploration of the history of popcorn – perfect for little readers who like books that teach them something.
I had plans of making strings of popcorn to put on our bushes for the birds, but that hasn’t happened yet. I did get the playroom thoroughly cleaned, which was a higher priority. Book club for me is about exposing my children to wonderful authors and enjoying their stories, and we’ve definitely done that, whether or not we get around to stringing popcorn.
Link up any activities you’ve done around Tomie dePaola’s books below!

My kids love popcorn! We’ll have to check this book out. :)
It’s a very fun book!
What sweet photo! We have owned the Popcorn Book for awhile but the kids have never been too interested in it before but we’ll have to try it again. :)
Terrific photo! Thank you for introducing me to an author I hadn’t heard of before.
I think you’ll enjoy his books!
I love checking out as many books as possible from the author of the month, too. I think reading the books is the most important part. :)
Yes, I think doing projects makes for some fun memories, but reading the books is key. :)
I thought we read most of Tomie De Paola’s books but the Popcorn Book has escaped us so we were happy to learn about it! We hope to have a popcorn fest too!
I love reading your book reviews. My girls are big popcorn fans so I think this would be a winner for us.
It’s a really fun book with some fascinating facts!
We love Paola’s books, but Anna gave him only half a star for illustrations :) She said she prefers illustrations to be more “realistic”. I might still fit a post about our Paola’s book (Bible Stories) – we’ll see.
I love that Anna only gives him a half star for illustrations!
That sounds like a very interesting book. My kids love popcorn so I bet they would love it.
It’s a very fun read!
Thanks for the great recommendation Maryanne! I’ve bookmarked it for my “to borrow at the library” list :)
I always eat more popcorn than I string anyways……
Good point :)
Sometimes the simplest things are the best things…look at that smile! Popcorn!
