The Kiss Box Back to School Craft for Kids

The Kiss Box book craft

Emma made this darling little box with things she found around the house after reading The Kiss Box at school. I was intrigued, so we borrowed the book from the library. It’s an absolutely charming new book (published in December 2011) about a little bear who exchanges kiss-filled boxes with his mother so that they won’t miss one another so much while they are apart. The illustrations are adorable, and I love this idea. if you’re looking for a book to help little ones cope with separation anxiety, this is definitely a story to read! I think this would be a lovely back to school craft.

Kisses inside a box: helping children with separation anxiety

Emma filled her box with kisses, and now she has them with her always. I love that she came up with this craft all on her own – and executed it without any help from me!

Here is what she used:

She taped paper to decorate the bottom of the box, and then cut hearts out of the same construction paper to go inside. You could paint the box instead (we love Crayola washable paints, because they come out of everything).

Close the lid of the box, and you have a collection of hearts for comfort, whenever you miss your parents!

If you haven’t read The Kiss Box, I highly recommend finding a copy. Most libraries should have it in stock. It is the perfect read for children who are struggling with separation anxiety.

  1. This sounds like such a sweet book. My Defne would love it :) I will look it up at the library. Thanks for linking up to Book Sharing Monday :)

    1. I love the ownership they have over the projects when they come up with them on their own!

  2. Beautiful!!!!
I love your daughter’s creativity! Kids can come up with some great things when given materials and time. Nice job, Mom! I’m sure she was very proud to see her work posted on your blog.

  3. How cute! I know that I brought this book from the library, and Anna read it on her own. It didn’t motivate her to craft though, but she is rarely motivated to craft in general anyway.

This is a very cute idea! our daughter came up with an idea to make “I miss you” cards- She draws pics of her family and hand them to us or holds onto them when anyone has to go away (to the store, to the gym, to school)…it is so cute! We are going to try the kiss box- but we’ll probably make origami hearts for it! :)

  5. We read this when it came out and I love it. My little guy still has anxiety when I go to work. A couple of other books I enjoy along the same lines are the Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and Love Waves by Rosemary Wells.

    1. We love “The Kissing Hand” – read it with my daughter when she was starting Kindergarten. I’ll have to look for “Love Waves” – thanks for the recommendations!

    1. Have you read “The Kiss Box”? It just came out at the end of last year – lovely picture book!
