Superhero Fun for Kids!

2013_08_18_9999_5

I have some superhero and animal loving kids, so when Blueprint Social offered me the chance to get a sneak preview of the new Disney Super Buddies movie (coming out on Blu-ray Combo Pack August 27th) for a sponsored post I knew it would be a fun diversion from all of the preparations we have been making for our move! I like the movie’s messages that you don’t have to have super heroes to be a friend, and that a super hero does good for good, not for glory.

My kids loved this friendship-focused family movie from the creators of Disney Buddies, and they immediately sought out their stuffed dogs! We had glow-in-the-dark bracelets that were just right for the dogs’ collars (you can barely see a pink one on seven-year-old Emma’s dog, above – and there is another pink on Lily’s pink dragon at the bottom of this post), and we pulled out our craft felt and made some simple superhero capes!

This no-sew craft based off of our super-simple superhero capes doesn’t get any easier! For a standard-sized stuffed dog, just cut out a cape shape as shown above the purple cape is lying on top of a red 9×12 inch sheet of craft felt – these are sold in pretty much any craft store.

We cut out a few smaller ones for five-year-old Johnny’s smaller stuffed dog, as well as Lily’s crocheted dragon and Anna’s crocheted baby doll.

It’s amazing what a difference a few pieces of felt will make – four stuffed animals turned into a group of friends ready for any adventure!

In this photo you can see that I cut a small notch in the back of the crocheted doll’s cape to make it easier to take on and off. This is one way around making a gigantic hole! Standard stuffed animals are so fluffy that you can usually fit their heads through a fairly small opening. Seven-year-old Emma was able to cut her cape out herself after I showed her where to cut.

My kids LOVE their new super hero stuffies! Johnny and Emma say that their dog’s super powers keep them from having scary dreams at night. That’s definitely a super power!

  1. how fun! everything is better with a cape… especially snuggly buddies. I have the feeling that after seeing this, Bear will want to make one for Poor Giraffe, his favorite stuffy.

  2. Love superhero capes, especially for Lily’s dragon! I am sure Anna would love her favorite blanket to have power to protect her from scary thoughts about the books she shouldn’t have read in the first place.

    1. Emma has that “scary thoughts from books she shouldn’t have read in the first place” problem as well. She is starting to get smarter about her reading choices, especially for later in the day.

  3. What a great and simple idea! Capes definitely give you super powers. Sounds like a cute movie too, we’ll have to check it out.
