Setting Goals Month by Month: June 2013!

2013_05_19_9999_113

What a month it has been! May started off with Mike finally officially getting his dream job – one that has literally been years in the making! And so, my May goal of getting unpacked quickly turned into a goal of getting the house packed up to put it in selling order so we can move to Silicon Valley this fall. Fifty boxes later we are getting there, but there is a lot to do still to get a relatively small house full of people looking large and spacious! We did spend a lot of time outside, and together as a family, so I managed to do quite well with my (thankfully simple!) May goals!

I also made time in May to attend a fantastic three hour workshop run by photographer Kerry Goodwin on taking photos in manual mode. I took the above photo of Anna the next day – and I think it is my all-time favorite baby picture! I have been pretty happy with my pictures since the class, although I find that photography is a lot like parenting: the more you learn, the more you realize how little you know.

We are going to be busy this June – here are a few things I’ll be focusing on:

  • Saying thank you to the kids’ teachers as the school year ends. Focus area: gratitude
  • Getting our house show-ready. Focus area: simplicity, and responsibility
  • Preparing for, enjoying, and recovering from a one-week camping trip – with my parents, all nine siblings, all of the nieces and nephews, and all but one in-law – 34 people, coming from as far away as China and Ukraine! Focus area: gratitude and education.

  1. If you’d like a tool for setting your goals, you can use this web application:

    Gtdagenda .com

You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, and a calendar.
Syncs with Evernote and Google Calendar, and also comes with mobile version, and Android and iPhone apps.

  2. A camping trip with (nearly) everybody! I wonder what the baby will make of it! Sounds fun! Will you try and leave the screens behind?
    Just love that photo!

  3. Congrats on your new adventure. I am glad I will be able to stay in touch through your blog but I will miss you here in Boston!! Have a wonderful time back in your old stomping grounds! Can’t wait to see your kids as they explore this new area!

  4. Wow, the camping trip sounds so awesome. What a chance for all of you to get together. I am really hoping your move will go smoothly.

  5. That is an incredible photo! Oh my you are busy but for such great reasons. Congratulations to Mike on the new job and that camping trip with almost your whole family will be incredible – enjoy!

  6. I always love your goals! I seem to careen through life one day at a time feeling like I am barely holding things together. Clearly I need some goals around that! Not starting shiny new projects unless my desk is clean and my project bag isn’t full.
So exciting that you guys are actually moving out here!

That’s fantastic that the move is for Mike’s dream job!! I hope for your sake that it involves less travel…

I LOVE that photo of Anna!!!! When I saw it, I thought it was extra-amazing, and how wonderful that your photography course is already paying off! :)

I hope you have a terrific time camping. That’s how Ben’s family always did his family reunions in Colorado, and although there were some less-than-ideal parts (like queuing for the shower), it was really nice to get to know more distant relatives and to enjoy a beautiful part of the world together.

  8. Three things:

    1) That photo? Gorgeous. GORG. EOUS.
    2) Love your monthly goal setting. I tend to run around like a chicken with my head cut off, so I just might join you.
    2) So glad to have found you on Sverve! I’ll actually be with Team Sverve in Silicon Valley for a month this summer…looks like I’ll just miss your family’s big arrival. :) Congratulations and best wishes on the move!

  9. Wow, that sounds like a FULL but exciting month for y’all! Hugs and greetings to as many from your fam as remember me, esp. your parents and B! <we are also considering a short adventure trip to the coasts of Croatia, six hour drive from here. Sometimes I think we're insane with four young kids but it is so fun and the memories are priceless!
