Parenting Three

my three kids

What’s not to love with these three little ones? The sleepless nights, sibling squabbles, and whining are all trumped by three gorgeous, personality-filled faces!

Things I’m loving about Emma right now:

  • Watching her step into her own as the “oldest child” – while still ensuring she gets to be a kid every day!
  • Hearing her interpretations of stories and every day events.
  • The way she calms and soothes Johnny and Lily when they are upset or afraid.
  • Gorgeous drawings and artwork that surprise me every day.

Things I’m loving about Johnny right now:

  • Hearing him narrate his play, for the first time in his life.
  • The things he chooses to tell me about preschool – also a new skill for him to be able to talk about what happened in a day.
  • His willingness to cooperate with his sisters and put up with our very girl-dominant household during the day. He’s always happy when Daddy comes home to even out the gender imbalance a little!
  • The little bit of baby in him that loves to sit on laps and be cuddled.

Things I’m loving about Lily right now:

  • Her ability to mimic just about anything anyone says. Last week we were in the store, and the check-out lady commented on how cute the bee on the back of her dress was. We ran two more errands, and she kept trying to get the random grown-ups we ran into to notice the “bee on my back!”
  • The joy she expresses when she gets people to smile and laugh.
  • The zen look she gets in the new baby swing we put on the swing set for her.
  • Wonderful baby hugs, with arms tight around my neck.

Nothing to work on at the moment as I’m sitting in the airport all by myself, scheduling this post. By the time it goes live Tuesday morning I’ll be back to sleepless nights, tired, fussy children, and sibling rivalry – which are easy to focus on but pale to insignificance in the grand scheme of the beauty of childhood.

You are so right, all of the challenges are so, so small in not only the grand scheme of childhood, but life in general.

How wonderful to have those moments of perspective and reflection that make it easier to get back into the nitty-gritty of parenting. Beautiful post, both visually and verbally.
