Orange-flavored Applesauce

Preschool cooking: slicing apples with a butter knife

My kids love making applesauce with their dad! This time they got fancy, with orange-flavored applesauce! This was three-year-old Lily’s first time slicing the apples (with a butter knife) – and she thought that was amazing!

Making applesauce is very simple: peel the apples, slice them into chunks, and bring them to a boil in a pot with a little juice. Then let it simmer for a while, mash it with a potato masher, and enjoy! This time we used orange juice and it had a nice orange flavor. You can refrigerate it first, but I like to eat it warm, with a little vanilla ice cream to make it extra-special!

Do you make your own applesauce?

  1. It has never worked for me to use a potato masher, but we’ve used a hand blender. Princess would love orange flavored applesauce.

  2. Great activity for the wee ones!! :)
My big girls have always loved to make applesauce…but they quit asking..and I forgot all about it! Thanks for the reminder!

Yum! I make mine in my Thermomix, leaving the peel on and adding water instead of juice. Maybe I’ll try orange juice sometime… and ice cream, too!!!
