A Book for Massachusetts: Make Way for Ducklings!

make way for ducklings

I’m thrilled to be representing Massachusetts for today’s Booking Across the USA blog hop! Make Way for Ducklings was the obvious choice – it is a book I remember loving as a child, and my kids adore it, too! Visiting the Make Way for Ducklings statue is a highlight for my kids every time we visit the Boston Common (that’s a two-year-old Lily in the picture), and this book has even inspired an annual Duckling Day Parade!

In this fun, based-on-a-real-event story, a family of ducklings grows up in the heart of Boston – safely, thanks to a helpful policeman! Print some of your own through my free printables page. Your kids can color these cute ducks after reading the story, and if you are really ambitious maybe you can make your child one of these adorable duckling costumes!

  1. I love “Make Way for Ducklings” and my mom, who’s from Massachusetts, loves it even more because she remembers all the places in it!

  2. Ahhhh, nice job Mama! Massachusetts is my absolute fav. While I love Boston, I am in love with the Pioneer Valley and the Berkshires.

Well I suppose that’s neither here nor there.

I love Make Way For Ducklings. What an excellent choice!

  3. A friend gave us Make Way for Duckling as a baby shower gift since we were moving this way, but I can’t believe we haven’t seen the ducks in the Common yet. Looks like we have a spring field trip–aren’t there swan boats there, too? If we ride up on the train, I can’t think of a better day! :)

  4. I have so many favorite books, but I don’t think any of them actually take place here in Ca. My favorite book growing up was about a little farmhouse that eventually got surrounded by a big city and then was moved back to the country where it belonged. I am not sure of the name but I have fond memories of it.

  5. Love the activity you shared here for the ducklings. Thank you for being brave enough to pick this classic, so often it’s about what’s new and we forget how important it is to share the classics with our young children.

  6. I remember when we studied Make Way for Ducklings for Massachusetts. Did you know you’re the only state (so far in our studies) with a state picture book?

I have to admit I”m rather jealous you can just go to the park that has the statue.

  7. I was wondering about what you’d use for Massachusetts, since my New Hampshire book overlapped onto Massachusetts. (Plus, I grew up there!) My first instinct was Make Way for Ducklings. It’s such a classic, how could you pick anything else!
