Marcus Pfister is the author of the month for the Virtual Book Club for Kids, and my kids enjoyed reading several of his stories! Pfister’s books feel very mellow to me, which makes them great picks as bedtime stories. Many of them include lessons, also – in a way that doesn’t feel preachy to kids. The Rainbow Fish is one of Pfister’s most widely-known books, and you can pair either the original story or any of the sequels (my kids also like Rainbow Fish to the Rescue) with the simple paper plate craft featured above (discovered through Johnny’s preschool a couple of years ago). All you need is a paper plate, scissors, a stapler, colored tissue paper squares, a bit of tin foil, and a googly eye.
This fish coloring page (originally designed for this blog post) also goes beautifully with the Rainbow Fish books. Click on the image below to print the full-page PDF file.
We also enjoyed reading Hopper and Hopper Hunts for Spring. My kids fell in love with this cute little bunny, and we will be looking for more books from this series to read together. I have a bunny printable from the same old blog post that goes along nicely with this series. Click on the image below to print the full-page PDF file.
Do you have a favorite Marcus Pfister book? Penguin Pete is next on our list to read – we just need to pick it up from the library! Denise Fleming is next month’s author, and we love The Cow Who Clucked, but haven’t read any of her other books. Do you have a favorite book by her that you recommend?
MaryAnne is a craft loving educator, musician, photographer, and writer who lives in Silicon Valley with her husband Mike and their four children.
My kids liked the design of the book with the shiny scales. It’s very eye catching.
Sounds like great books!
Love the paper plate fish. I might even join this month with my old rainbow fish post. Our favorite from this series was Rainbow Fish Discovers Deep Sea. But, as I mentioned on FB, we really liked a less known book by Marcus Pfister – Henri the Egg Artist.
We haven’t read either of these. Time to put in more library requests!
I love your fish craft! Can you believe we haven’t read any Marcus Pfister books? I need to remedy that!! I just bought our tickets – the girls and I will be spending eight weeks in the States this summer and I’m so excited about getting them library cards!
I like Rainbow Fish! Wonder where our copy has gotten to… I read it a lot to my first child and changed the wording just slightly so the little blue fish’s name was Michael. :) So nice to promote sharing!
I used to change names a lot when I only had two or three kids. It’s harder to find books with enough kids in them, now!
That’s why his name sounded familiar, because of Rainbow Fish. We’ve got a couple of his other books too, and they’re lots of fun.
We enjoyed all of the books of his that we read!
Of Denise Fleming, we liked In the Tall, Tall Grass a lot. And we also liked Marcus Pfister’s Rainbow Fish! What a great idea to incorporate books and crafts.
