Use Fleece to Patch Clothing

skirt repair or embellishment with fleece scraps

I’ve written before about using fleece to patch clothing, but it’s such a favorite with my kids that I thought I would mention it again – and this skirt post has been sitting in my drafts folder for two and a half years!

The skirt pictured above had a hole underneath the pink star. Odd place for a skirt to have a hole? That’s because the skirt was made from a t-shirt, and that’s exactly where all of my shirts get holes sooner or later, thanks to a sliver on the back of a chair that I always forget about. The star was made using a scrap from this reversible toddler jacket.

From Emma’s (and now Lily’s – she wears and loves the same skirt) point of view, the star is just making the skirt fancier. It’s a great way to personalize backpacks or other outfits, too. The fleece never frays, so you can leave the edges raw, and my kids like the softness of it!

Do you patch or repurpose clothes? Besides letting my kids experiment with old clothes and fashion design, I’ve also turned old shirts into pajamas, draft blockers, and handbags! I love reducing, reusing, and recycling.

  1. I want to patch my kids’ jeans but I can’t figure out how to do it. I know that sounds silly and I could probably google it or something but I can’t do it on the machine and who wants to hand sew denim?

  2. Cute! I always get holes on the shoulders of my shirts from a certain cat who likes to jump up there. She grabs my shirt to pull herself the rest of the way up.

  3. Fun ideas–both the shirt/skirt and the patch! I’ve made t-shirt bags with my very limited sewing skills, but love new repurposing ideas! Do your girls ever intentionally make holes just to get a sweet patch? :)

  4. That is adorable! I’m not much of a sewer but I think even I could attempt that skirt. So cute and looks really simple.
