Emma and Art

Drawing with Dad

Drawing has always been one of Emma’s passions. One of her favorite activities is drawing lessons with Dad. She’ll tell Mike what to draw, and then imitate his drawings. Here are some of Mike’s pictures:

And Emma’s versions of the same creatures:

She used a how-to-draw book to create this very happy, lanky elephant:

But my absolute favorites are the pictures that come from her own imagination. Like this fantastic duck:

What is your child’s passion?

Emma’s drawings are wonderful (and Dad’s too)! It’s been interesting to see how different my children’s drawings are. My son began by drawing airplanes. When he was three, he filled an entire journal with airplanes. However, my three year old daughter draws faces. She often draws our family and our dog. She’s filled page after page with faces.

I love this post about drawing with Dad. My Daddy use to draw with us as children. For Easter every year we would dye eggs and then our Daddy would personalize them by drawing a small picture on them for each member of the family. It is a special thing spending time with your Daddy. I am now 55 yrs and he is 78 yrs. and it is still a special thing to spend time together. :) Joyce

    1. @joyce – Dads who spend with their children are wonderful – and what a neat family Easter tradition!

  4. Two Chicks and a Hen

Wow–her art is incredible! I would say that my oldest is passionate about art too, but less drawing and more mixed media/scissors/tape/glue type art. She also loves to make up stories and songs. I find her very inspiring.

    1. @Two Chicks and a Hen – I LOVE hearing the stories and songs kids make up!

      @lynn – I think being a goofball would have to be Johnny’s current passion…

@Natalie – Emma definitely gets her artistic ability from her dad. She is frequently disappointed by my attempts to draw things for her.

@Quadmama – I think she’s better at that than I am! Which tells you where her artistic talent is NOT coming from!

@Ash – That is so neat that one child’s passion can inspire the rest of the family!

@Ticia – Batman would have gotten along well with the child version of me…

@Maile – I borrowed that book from the library (I think on your recommendation?) and really enjoyed it. But then we had to take it back. Maybe we should buy a copy…

@Our Nifty Notebook – I love seeing the art different kids create! We tried painting tonight, and Lily painted her shirt very well. She didn’t get ANY paint on her paper!

@Taryn – I love the idea of stitching out a child’s line drawing! Children’s art is the best!

  5. Wow – Emma (and Mike) do have a talent for drawing. How exciting to see those emerging abilities. I was curious to see the comment by Ash – I think my daughter belongs to the second half of her children :)

  6. I have four children and it is split right down the middle on their interest in creating. My middle girl is the one (8) with all the talent and has inspired the rest of the family to explore expression. She has been taking art lessons for the last few years and has started to really enjoy pastels and the blending effect on different textures.
    Thank you for sharing

  7. I love Emma’s pictures. Kaia is also an avid drawer, and I also love the pictures that come from her imagination the most. I secretly throw away any coloring book that finds its way into our house because I feel like she’s less creative when she’s coloring in coloring books. We’re using the book Drawing with Children by Mona Brookes to do drawing lessons together. It’s never been a particular talent of mine, but I’m finding I enjoy it!

Such a wonderful talent to be able to convey her thoughts and ideas into pictures, and to reproduce what she sees. Love the drawings!

Nikki’s enjoying the violin right now, making up her own tunes and trying to reproduce ones she knows (with some success), as well as learning new songs.

What a delight to enjoy these budding talents!

  9. Those are wonderful. One of mine loves to draw too and we try to encourage that artistic spirit as much as possible. She did a line drawing a few years ago that I think I am going to trace onto some cotton fabric and do a simple stitchery. It’s just too funny. We also have a picture that she did last year at school using some water colors that we framed and hung at the office. I just love bragging on her as I’m sure you do with Emma too.

  10. Drawing with Emma is one of my favorite things to do in the world. We try to draw together every night after I come home from work. I have her (and Johnny’s) artwork plastered all over the walls in my office and I can trace the evolution of her drawing abilities. She has made several leaps in the past few weeks.

  11. She has talent! Collin (age six) loves to draw and often spends his free time after school drawing. I have to get him a book to learn different techniques!

    1. @Christy – I’d love to hear if you find any books that are especially good!

@Jennifer – Those Usbourne books are great! We’ve borrowed them from the library several times.

@Elisa – That is so cool that Nikki is making up songs on the violin already!
