All three of my kids are fans of Dinosaur Train on PBS, so when I found a silicone train cupcake mold on sale for $3 I knew exactly what to make for Johnny’s birthday cake! The dinosaurs are made from candy melts and a dinosaur chocolate mold I got for $2 from Amazon. The windows/wheels (depending how you look at it) are m&m’s (always a hit in our home!), and the frosting is actually nutella.
All three kids helped make the batter for the cupcakes, but I took them out of the pan and frosted them after putting the kids to bed. I also made the dinosaurs on my own, just to simplify things. They were pretty excited to see the completed cake the next morning!
The cake was a hit with Johnny and his little birthday play date attendees! We had a super fun, mellow party – I pulled the rug out of the living room, put down our car play mat instead, and brought out all our trains and cars. Little boy parties are the best!

The cake came out great. We love Nutella and I never would have thought to use it as frosting!

Trains is the theme we are using for J-jo’s birthday this year(I know, it isn’t til August, but planning parties stresses me out even if only for family). I would NEVER have thought to use Nutella as frosting. Your cake is lovely.
