Creative Play with Play Dough and Squinkies

creative play with play dough and squinkies

My kids made this little squinky car out of play dough, along with a gazillion other accessories that are a little harder to identify! They dried this ship out, and now it’s a regular feature in their squinky play (which, for whatever reason also often features squinkies having to wait in line).

Here is our favorite recipe for making play dough:

Play Dough Recipe

1/2 cup flour
1 Tablespoon oil
1/2 cup water (add food coloring to water)
1/4 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar

Mix dry ingredients together. Add oil and water (we heated our water first, to make it cook a little faster). Heat over medium heat. Stir constantly until it comes away from sides of pan. Knead slightly. Store in plastic bags or Tupperware.

We have also enjoyed combining play dough with rocks, mixing play dough with googley eyes, and setting up mini play dough bakeries!

How do your kids play with play dough?

  1. I love that the Squinkies need to wait in line and that they have such a fancy car. Your children have wonderful imaginations!

  2. Hahahaha, of course they need to stand in line. Have your kids been doing too much waiting? :-) Squinkies do seem perfect for standing in lines somehow. We like the play pizza cutters and extruders.

  3. I much prefer homemade playdough too. It is less smelly and so fun when it’s nice and warm. I love how your kids are playing so creatively with toys and playdough. Those little plastic toys figurines are so great and versatile (and portable!)

My younger kids all play with play-doh weekly now while they wait at the kitchen table at Nikki’s violin teacher’s house. They have cookie cutters and pieces of thick dowel as rolling pins. I need to keep in mind extension activities so the hour continues to pass quickly!

  5. How fun! How to they play with playdouh, they stop eating it, so that;s a start lol! They love rolling it with a rolling pin and using cookies cutter to cut shapes.

  6. Love the color of that play dough! We need to make some. Emma G was just saying the other day how we need some. :)

  7. Aw man. When J is playing pretend, his toys end up following all the rules he hears through the day. I’m sure school is rubbing off on them :-). J loves using cookie cutters and rolling pins for his play dough.
