Seven-year-old Emma recently discovered Bill Waterson’s Calvin and Hobbes. She tried reading it a few months ago, and declared that it made no sense; now she finds it hilarious! It’s funny to see kids grow up and change!
Johnny has reminded me of Calvin for quite a while – most especially for his ability to grimace for photographs. Sometimes I catch him off guard:
But he quickly starts posing – and pulling faces!
I’m glad he has a sense of humor – and that modern technology means that I can take picture after picture without having to pay to develop the film!
But, maybe I should print them off anyhow. After all this is his personality!
Do your kids make faces instead of smiling for pictures? Would you frame a picture like this? Did you pull faces for pictures as a kid? Do you have prints? I remember insisting on smiling “like a Cabbage Patch Kid” when I was around Johnny’s age!

Love his many faces! I also love being able to catch my kids when they’re being silly. It’s hard to get my kids to smile for photos! Maybe Emma G has been in Africa too long, because she tends to go with the serious face, a common one among the African adults.
Seems like kids get to a certain age and have trouble smiling on cue.
These faces are adorable. My kids tend to make those fake smiles.
My daughter had a similar experience with Amelia Bedelia. One day the humor just clicked.
Yes, Amelia Bedelia is like this too! I should pull those out and see what the kids think of them now!
These pictures are fantastic. My kids like making faces for the camera, too. Although I can usually get my younger one to smile. My older kid… not so much.
Thanks, Erica! I enjoy photographing my kids :)
Oh the faces my kids pull. They get it from their Dad, or so I claim. I very much see my kids in Calvin, especially the imagining a whole other world than what everyone else sees.
Wow, I’m impressed that Emma gets the humor in Calvin and Hobbes. It always stuck me as very grown up humor.
He is so cute! I used to love reading Calvin and Hobbs when I was a kid. Have a wonderful weekend.
Haha! Michael smiles this cheesy smile when I point the camera at him! Natural moments are my favourite, but Johnny’s grimaces sure are fierce. I can’t advise about printing… I don’t think I’ve printed a single photo of my kids in 7 years, except the ones used for passports…
I love these photos – I think they definitely deserve to be framed!! And yes – my kids do pull faces for photos too and so does their father!
Those pictures are adorable, and you are such a marvelous photographer! I’d rather have funny faces than forced smiles on pics. We should try Calvin and Hobbes here – we have a huge collector edition :)
Thank you, Natalie! I really enjoy photography!
And I agree that funny faces are always better than forced smiles!
