Books for Toddlers and THE Parenting Book to Read

My two-year-old daughter, Lily, ADORES books. More than any of my other kids. Thanks to her passion, we average twenty books a day. Some she loves and I don’t (scary poisonous creature books and snake books? Why???). Here are a couple we BOTH enjoy – over and over!

I found Red Sled through this list at Brimful Curiosities. Lily LOVES it, and so do I. The onomatopoeic text gets her paying special attention to the way words sound, the story and illustrations are adorable, and the plot keeps you guessing – with a fun surprise ending! We have probably read this book thirty times in the past two weeks, and I still like it!

I love wordless picture books, and Where’s Walrus? (recommended by Storied Cities) did not disappoint! A walrus escapes from the zoo for an adventure that will change his life forever!

I read a lot of parenting books. I skim-read even more. The Power of Validation (brand new – came out at the end of 2011!) is the first I’ve read in a LONG time that gave me some new ideas! I want to raise kids who know who they are, understand what is important, and have the confidence they need to carefully evaluate situations and decisions. And I think this book will help me accomplish that.

  1. Thanks for the recommendation on the parenting book! The one that I am reading now (and finding a lot of interesting ideas!) is Raising Happiness. Thanks for joining WMCIR!

  2. I am always looking for a good read too and will check it out! Way to go on all those books. At 20 books a day, she is listening to 7,300 books a year. Think of all those fantastic vocabulary words!!! My 2 year old loves books, but only 2 or 3 at a time. His choices always amaze me =)

I always like book recommendations from you! Time to send some purchase requests to my library… :)

  4. I haven’t heard of either of those books but will see whether my library has them in. We’re the same with the books and I just ordered loads more from Amazon opps.

The validation books looks good – I recently read “Raising Children, raising ourselves” which is all about validation and I’m using it loads during tantrums it’s starting to have an impact as well and with validating J’s feelings (mostly frustration) the tantrums are getting shorter.

    1. That’s a book I haven’t read – I’ll have to look for it. Thanks for the recommendation!

  5. I love all self help books too…I have never heard of the power of validation…I am excited to check it out! Thanks for the review!
