Books by Julia Donaldson and Book Activities

Our family first discovered author Julia Donaldson when some UK friends sent us a copy of
The Gruffalo when Johnny was born. This cute story about a spunky mouse became an instant hit in our house – such a hit, in fact, that our board book copy needs replacing! I’m still working out the details, but I should have a fun activity and giveaway to go along with this book later this month or in April.

We borrowed several new-to-us books by Julia Donaldson this month, and One Ted Falls out of Bed was the clear favorite of three-year-old Lily! This story is cute, and it’s a great introduction to counting for kids! Want a cute add-on activity? Make one of these cute bears! If your child is old enough to sew themselves, cut it out of felt so that they can easily stitch it by hand!

What the Ladybug Heard is another wonderful story that we discovered this month about a tiny ladybug who never talks, but decides to in order to save the day! I love that all the farm animals work together with their tiny leader to solve the problem! I think this book is perfect for a farm-themed sensory bin. All you need are some small plastic farm animals and a bin of rice (sandboxes work well, too!)

Stick Man is my five-year-old son’s favorite of Donaldson’s books. I love this story of a father who just wants to come home to his family, and the text is portrays this perfectly! Want an activity? Go on a walk, find the perfect stick, and add some googley eyes for a stick man of your very own!

  1. I missed this month! We also like Julia Donaldson books, and my personal favorite by far is a Snail and a Whale.

  2. We love Julia Donaldson and are busy planning a Gruffalo birthday Party. I’m hoping we finish our Gruffalo pinata in time to add it here. What a wonderful resource this link up is!

  3. I am only familiar with the first one ‘The Gruffalo’, but I am sure they are all good. Speaking of sewing my kids are taking a little sewing class during spring break, I’ll let you know how it goes :) fingers crossed.
