Clothes For Mum Challenge

drafting a skirt

One of my goals for November was to participate in the Clothes for Mum Challenge, and here I am barely scraping by on the last day of the challenge! At least I made it, using a draft-your-own skirt method I watched my mom use last December. Very basic drafting, based solely on waist and hip measurements, not the proper drafting you can find here. And so you have me sheepishly modeling my skirt, in icky indoor night lighting because I left this project until the very last minute:

The skirt is made from some material I bought way back in 1999. I was a college student, flying home for Christmas, and the airline lost my luggage. Back then, airlines felt like they should compensate for their errors, so they gave me some money to buy clothes. I bought fabric instead and made a few simple dresses but mostly wore my 14-year-old sister’s clothing (who was conveniently roughly my size). And hoarded most of the fabric, for the next decade and a bit…

I’ve finally decided to stop hoarding this gorgeous linen and to wear it instead. The skirt isn’t perfect, but it is the ideal length and fullness to chase after children while preserving a hint of elegance. I should probably do something about that wrinkled shirt, though!

It looks fantastic! I love that you’ve had the fabric for so long, too. It sounds like something I would do.
