Month in Review and August Goals

Lily!

Can you believe my baby turns one in THREE DAYS? This past year has flown by, and I’m doing my best to savor every minute.

A huge thank you to everyone who shared ideas for keeping the kids happy during our speech therapy commute last month – things are going much better! We still have some fighting and some fussing, but for the most part the kids are now used to sitting in the car for longer periods of time. It helps that they really enjoy speech therapy! Emma’s speech is moving ahead in leaps and bounds; we just added Early Intervention speech therapy to our existing service for Johnny, so hopefully we’ll have some Johnny quotes alongside the Emma quotes sometime soon!

July was a month full of friends and family. A bunch of Mike’s coworkers came over for a barbeque, and then a couple days after that we got together with some fellow alumni from our alma mater, along with their kids. It was great to catch up with everyone and see how much their kids had grown up since the last time we got together! I also really enjoyed our impromptu play dough party, and hope to have more casual get-togethers with friends in the coming months!

Mike and I attended our first-ever blogger event – a dinner at Myers + Chang, courtesy of MyBlogSpark and General Mills. I wondered about the General Mills part, and sure enough at the end of the meal I found this in my fortune cookie:

wanchaiferry
I’m always a fan of creative marketing, and all the more when it means Mike and I get a free date – to somewhere (much) more glamorous than Costco! The Wanchai Ferry entrees tasted great, although this fortune cookie did explain why the texture of the orange chicken was a little strange! I had hoped to meet some other local bloggers, but the set-up of the evening didn’t make that very easy, particularly since we were seated next to a couple of food bloggers who (it appeared) thought we were competing food bloggers. If only they had been willing to say “hello”, they would have known that I am no competition to any food blogger, and I could have linked over to their blogs!

strawberries

I’m thrilled to report that I didn’t kill any plants last month! We transplanted our strawberries and most of the tomato plants, and they are all doing well. We’ll see if we manage to get any strawberries or tomatoes; so far a very well-fed chipmunk has beat us to all but five blueberries from our blueberry bush, and something ate the single green strawberry that had appeared on our strawberry plants!

We went to a farmer’s market, but it was a bit of a flop; the kids were hot and therefore grumpy. The market I picked was very small, and the vendors didn’t seem particularly pleased to see children. Maybe we’ll try a different farmer’s market in August, particularly since I want to participate in this event. Massachusetts readers, do you have any recommendations of children-friendly farmer’s markets?

I also met my second bonus goal of sewing something. I made a veil for my friend getting married in August, and a couple of fashion doll-sized sleeping bags.

I had a wonderful thirtieth birthday, and I’m excited to celebrate Mike’s thirtieth birthday in August alongside Lily’s first! Goals for August:
  • Celebrate Mike and Lily’s birthdays. Target Area: gratitude
  • Play outside as much as possible. Target Areas: peace, health, and education
  • Plan and execute a road trip, first to Atlantic City (where Mike has a conference) and then on Philadelphia (for a wedding)! Any recommendations of things to see or do in either location, or along the way? Target Areas: peace and education
I’m running this as a linky again. If you’re blogging about goals this month, please add your post to the linky below, and include the button or a link back to this post!

  1. Wow that stinks about the possible foodies next too you. How rude! When we went to dinner before Disney on Ice with the other bloggers I was shocked by how unfriendly the other family at our table was. I mean, get a GRIP!

  2. Love the picture – and I also can’t believe that Lily is turning 1 already. It looks like you have another busy month ahead. I think I read about Philadelphia “Please Touch” museum somewhere. I’ve been both to Philly and to Atlantic City, but it was well in pre-kids days, so I don’t know of any good places to visit. I do think that old Philly might be interesting to Emma.

  3. Forgot this–Lily is absolutely edible in that first picture:-). Jamie thinks she and Jesse have similar expressions, by the way:-).

  4. I really enjoy reading your goal posts each month. They are inspiring. You get so much done each month, you should feel very accomplished.

Our babies are turning one! Bittersweet.

I wish you luck in all that you are setting out to accomplish in August and hope you have some very fun, exciting road trips, farmers market trips and awesome birthday parties too!! If I were closer I’d love to tag along on those farmers market trips:-).

I’m so glad you’re enjoying more peaceful car trips and that the kids like their speech sessions! Win-win!

Totally in awe that you didn’t kill any plants – plants quiver in fear upon entering my property since they can realistically expect that half of them will perish. The other half are tough stuff!

Sounds like a busy, fun-filled month coming up. Can’t wait to hear about your adventures!
