Spending the first nearly-seven years of my life on a farm taught me many important lessons, but it didn’t make me an expert gardener. So far the plants that do grow (tomatoes a couple years ago, and one beautiful ripe blueberry this year) get eaten by the wildlife that spend so much time in our yard. We decided to try some strawberries in planter boxes by the house, along with some tomatoes that miraculously survived being planted from seeds purchased from the dollar bins at Target. The kids really enjoyed helping, although they did kill a couple strawberry plants in the process.
The remaining plants are doing well – so far, so good!

we usually have the too much wildlife problem…. except this year it’s too many weeds! Hope yours work out well for you!

My dad put me onto an old out-of-print brook by Ruth Stout entitled ‘Gardening Without Work.’ Basically, the bottom line for her is deep mulch. So I’ve got a lot of hay in the area where I want to plant my vegetable garden, and I’m hoping that will keep things weed free and reduce evaporation in our sandy soil.
Haven’t planted anything yet, though! I think it’s a great idea to start with tasty strawberries! Emma and Johnny will be wild with excitement if/when they get to eat something they helped grow!

I have racoons problem in my backyard. They eat whatever I grow. I think I also have some bugs problem too because my roses and peach tree (no fruits yet) leaves look like they’ve been eaten partially. There’s so much to learn about gardening. I think it’s continuous learning and I hope I will make progress along the way.
ahhh yes…. kids and dirt! They go together like chili and rice! :-)

I remember from my own childhood – rabbits are cute, but can be annoying garden pests. Good luck with your strawberries – they look rather healthy so far.

So fun! We had a beautiful, big garden in Africa and we loved it! We planted a small one this year. Our herbs are doing well but that’s about it!

We are one of the only homes on our block without a dog… so our backyard has become a refuge for rabbits. I really want to start a garden, but don’t want it to fall victim to the bunnies. This year we did planter box flowers, which are starting to grow. Hubby planted chili peppers, too, and I’m eager to see how they turn out. My girls love running to the planter box whenever we’re outside so they can see how everything is growing.
