Drawstring goody bags

drawstring goody bag

Emma’s birthday party is tomorrow, and as one of the activities the kids will be decorating their own goody bags. You can buy bags made for this purpose, for $2-3 apiece. I made 18 for under $3 using a muslin remnant from our local fabric store.

pinning to sew the edges

Having a serger makes this project much easier. I serged the bags shut (edges are rounded because I find that faster than turning corners), serged the top edge to prevent fraying, and pinned over the top edge. Then I stitched the top edge about half an inch in, leaving an opening for drawstring insertion.

Here’s the finished bag with the drawstring added. I used a spool of cording that I happened to have on hand. I have an elastic-insertion tool that I used, but if you don’t have the special tool a safety pin makes a good substitute.

All ready for decoration. We’ll be using foam stickers and washable markers. You can buy special permanent fabric markers, or use (typically less expensive but equally effective) sharpie pens to make a permanent image. We’ll be inserting sheets of cardboard into the bag to prevent bleed-through during the decoration process.
