Cake for a two-year-old

cat cake

The inspiration for Johnny’s birthday cake came from my family’s cat, Kairi, whom Johnny adored but who, sadly, did not adore Johnny. Aunt K. baked a rectangular hot water chocolate cake with LOTS of help from Emma a Johnny. I cut it into a cat face shape, adding a second layer (made from corner scraps) for the mouth. We used nutella as frosting, frosting only the mouth because we had already eaten most of the nutella in the house. My mom had some gingerbread house candy that we used for the ears and eyes (gumdrops and Necco wafers), and we added pretzels for whiskers. Necco wafers only have writing on one side; I should have turned this side face down on the cake. I also should have removed crumbs from the plate before taking a picture…

If you substitute wacky cake for the hot water chocolate cake and use something other than pretzels for the whiskers, this would make a great cake for a child with egg allergies.

We gave Emma and Johnny the remaining scraps to decorate in their own special way:

Johnny decorates his cake emma decorates (eats) her cake

  1. It was the same story when we visited my parents. Anna was in love with their cat, but the cat was less than thrilled to have a small human following him everywhere :) Your cake looks gorgeous!

  2. Happy Birthday, Johnny!!

I love how this cake has a story behind it! The crumbs not only make it authentic, but also somehow more delicious. Yum!!
