Calendar matching game

We took our 2009 calendar and cut out the big pictures and the little ones from the back of the calendar to make a matching game. Not an original idea – I’m sure I’ve seen it somewhere in blogland and I remember doing it as a kid as well – but simple, fun, and [...]

Month in Review and February Goals

Congratulations to LiEr, the winner of my Bamboo Leg Huggers giveaway!

January ended with a week of sickness reminiscent of the virus Emma and Johnny had for the entire month of August last year. I took them to the doctor on day three this time around, but they still weren’t able to do anything. We’ll be [...]

Kitchen chemistry

We’ve been doing a lot of kitchen-based chemistry lately. First, we baked these cookies. My primary motivation in making these was to have cookies to eat, but we also talked about solids and liquids, and how different liquids turn to solids at different temperatures (water vs. butter) and looked at how the texture of [...]

First Christmas Craft

We marked the beginning of the Christmas season by putting up our Christmas tree and making a paper chain. I originally intended the chain to be long enough to go around our tree, but the kids lost interest. We embellished it a little with our heart-shaped hole punch. We only own this one hole [...]

Texture play

Yesterday was one of those days. The kind where the kids are on edge and I get nearly nothing done. Thankfully this old favorite (see my original post about this activity here) pulled Emma and Johnny out of their sour moods. Johnny swirled everything around haphazardly. Emma made little mounds of corn and [...]

Cake decorating for preschoolers

Mike’s been gone all week (he gets back tonight). Emma is a HUGE Daddy’s Girl, and to get her out of mourning mode I suggested that we bake and decorate a cake. I originally intended to make and decorate a cake similar to her last birthday cake, which Emma also helped me make (incidentally [...]

Learning through play

Emma has been doing a lot of educational play with her younger siblings lately. A few recent examples:

Teaching Johnny his letters and numbers.

“Reading” (reciting) a Halloween counting book to Johnny (I’m afraid I don’t remember the title of this book and we already returned it to the library [...]

Autumn leaves that last all year round

Step 1: Find some pretty leaves.

Step 2: Press leaves in a heavy book by laying flat inside a folded paper towel.

Step 3: Leave alone for three days (or longer). It’s important for the leaf to be completely dry before you remove it.

Step 4: Remove leaves [...]

Child-constructed matching game

Clothespins

STEPS:

Divide back of plate into as many sections as you want to use colors.
Color each section a different color.
Color the clothespins these same colors
Attach the clothespins to the section of the plate with the same color.

This is an activity I’ve seen on several blogs. I got [...]

Pattern blocks: Beyond templates

I blog about pattern blocks quite a bit. They are currently my favorite educational toy, and this is one of the (many) reasons why. Emma called me in the other day and said, “Mama, look at my robot!” I went in, and she had created this beautiful robot. She went on to explain [...]
