Repurposing cast-off jeans part two: From pants to handbag

Emma came up with this idea after watching me make my denim door draft stopper.

MATERIALS:

cast-off jeans
scissors
thread
sewing machine

STEPS:

1) Cut off part of the pant leg – long enough to create the depth of the handbag you want plus seam allowances on either end. Choose which end of [...]

Laptop Cozy Tutorial

MATERIALS:

Enough fabric to wrap up your laptop (as if it were a gift) twice
Enough quilt batting to wrap up your laptop once
Scissors
Thread
Sewing Machine

STEPS:

1) Cut out two strips of fabric large enough to cover your laptop with extra for your seam allowance and extra at the top (to create a fold). Here is my fabric, [...]

Colored Rice

The rice that I used for the project was originally intended for I Spy jars for my kids. I made the jars, but they were not happy (to put it lightly) to discover that I intended to keep the small animals I had put in the jars in there permanently. So we removed the [...]

Design your own blog button

I’ve had a few people ask how I made my blog button. It’s really easy and doesn’t require artistic talent, but it isn’t a technique I’ve seen used anywhere else.

MATERIALS:

Digital photo
GIMP (free download here) or similar photo editing software

STEPS:

Open your photo in GIMP. I used the photo from this post.
Crop your picture [...]

10-minute skirt

Sewing doesn’t have to take a lot of time. I made this skirt yesterday morning in under ten minutes – with all three children awake.

MATERIALS:

sewing machine
scissors
thread

The steps are very simple:

Cut [...]

Cardboard Creations: Doll Car Seat

I had plans to cover this car seat in pink fleece, but Emma insisted on keeping the plain cardboard version so that it would look more like her own tan car seat. So, here you have it in its minimalist glory.

MATERIALS:

Empty cardboard cylinder (we used a Morton salt container)
Ribbon
Something to cut [...]

Autumn leaves that last all year round

Step 1: Find some pretty leaves.

Step 2: Press leaves in a heavy book by laying flat inside a folded paper towel.

Step 3: Leave alone for three days (or longer). It’s important for the leaf to be completely dry before you remove it.

Step 4: Remove leaves [...]

No-sew Fabric-covered box

Being my frugal self, I tend to store toys in cardboard boxes. They work great, but aren’t terribly attractive. Here are the results of a recent attempt to beautify the playroom. If you want to be super-thrifty, use a water-soluble glue so you can peel off, wash, and re-use the fabric once the box [...]

Baby Wipes

MATERIALS:

flannel
scissors
sewing machine

STEPS:

1) Tear flannel into baby wipe-size pieces

2) Serge or zig zag edges

I’m using these as inserts for Lily’s newborn diapers also (I’ve made one more cover and plan to make a few more). There are various baby wipe solution recipes on the internet, but I use plain [...]

Crayon roll

I decided to make crayon rolls for my kids after seeing Valerie make a felt crayon wallet for her daughter in this post at the Frugal Family Fun Blog. I’ve admired crayon rolls on many blogs, but I was attracted to the idea of using felt as a material because it’s so easy to sew. [...]
